A watercolor painting of three yellow goldfinches with black-and-white wings perched among green leaves and clusters of purple and red berries. The scene is delicate and lively, with expressive brushwork and a white background. Signed “Cate Mandigo” with a small red bird icon in the bottom right corner.

Description

Growing up in the southern Adirondacks, folk traditions—especially quilting and music—were part of daily life. But the most famous artist I knew was Cate Mandigo. Her prints were everywhere: in the dentist’s waiting room, in the entryway of my best friend’s house, and in magazines like Country Living. A few years ago, I reached out to ask how she built a career at the crossroads of folk painting and affordable distribution.

Folk Art at Scale: Cate Mandigo Interview

A watercolor painting of three yellow goldfinches with black-and-white wings perched among green leaves and clusters of purple and red berries. The scene is delicate and lively, with expressive brushwork and a white background. Signed “Cate Mandigo” with a small red bird icon in the bottom right corner.

Cate Mandigo was the most visible artist of my childhood in the 80s and 90s—her prints were everywhere, and years later, I asked how she made that possible.
